After a long week filled with challenges, stress, competitions and enthusiasm, RoboCup 2017 has come to an end. This newsletter summarizes everything that happened this week.
The team arrived in Nagoya, Japan on Monday. That day was spent investigating the surroundings and recovering from the jetlag. Tuesday and Wednesday were the setup days, which means the robots are unpacked and tested. On top of that, the MSL challenges and the @Home Inspection and poster presentation occurred during the setup days. Tech United won MSLs’ Scientific Challenge and AMIGO was allowed to join the competition.
Thursday through Saturday are the competition days. During those days, all round robins of the Middle Size League and challenges of @Home League are scheduled. The MSL team wins all matches of the round robins and @Home performs many challenges. Since the MSL team has won all matches during these days, they are the winners of Round Robin 2 and get to play the semifinals on Sunday versus the number four, NuBot. AMIGO performs well during some challenges and less during others, but they win the Open Challenge by using AMIGOs newly adopted brother, HERO! HERO and AMIGO work together to deliver a cold beer to the judges. Their high score for the Open Challenge brings them to the Finals together with the teams ToBi and Homer.
The MSL team starts the day with the semifinals versus NuBot. In the previous matches versus NuBot during this competition, Tech United won comfortably with high scores. Luckily, the robots handle pressure quite well, and qualified for the finals with a 9 – 0 win. The robots stick to traditions and play the finals versus Water. The finale is a great match, with beautiful plays on both sides. However, Water is too fast and too strong for Tech United and beats them with a 6 – 3 win. The finals of the @Home League are comparable to the Open Challenge, they get to choose what they would like to show the judges. They show that AMIGO can track where sound is coming from, that she can detect poses and remember faces. They impress the judges, but not sufficiently for the first place. The do move up one position to the second place! This means Tech United goes home with two silver medals!
