Getting Ready for Action

31 March 2011

The website has colored bright orange and that means that we are now officially inTournament Mode at Tech United Eindhoven. The faces of our team members are focused and the fridge (not walking) is filled with caffeinated drinks. Tech United is ready for action!

This does not mean we are doing nothing. We are approaching midnight and the Robocup hall has been closed for the public for some time now. The guards are wondering when we will go home, but hearing the discussions about “motion” and “vision” around me; I doubt it will be soon.

Traveling to Magdeburg

Yesterday was reserved to make a long journey towards Magdeburg. Leaving Eindhoven behind us, we left in two vans and a truck. The best-of-the-best of the robotics research of Eindhoven University of Technology was heading for the German Open!

Today (Wednesday) was the set-up day for all RoboCup projects. The mid-size league focused all the energy on the laser range scanner for TURTLE #1, the goal keeper. The scanner on the back of the keeper can now be used to determine its position with respect to goal very accurately. After a couple of hours of hard work the team finally made it work.

Our team members in hall 1 have worked on the AMIGO navigation software today. Tomorrow the service robot must navigate thru a dummy living room and do task like recognizing and grasping objects. These objects can be everything, like a can of soda or a bag of chips.

RoboQuotes

After a hard day’s work, we are slowly coming to the end of the set-up day. The Tech United office has made a final round trough the halls and made some conversation. Here some of the comments they received about the set-up day and tomorrow;

Harrie van de Loo (Hardware coordinator MSL): “Everything looks good. I’m very happy with the results. We did a lot of work today.”

Koen Meessen (Solenoid Shooter MSL): “After the First match tomorrow we will know exactly where we need to improve.”

Wouter Aangenent (Strategy): “Today was a good day. a lot of problems have been solved. I expect high scores tomorrow.”

Gerrit Naus (Communication & Path planning MSL): “It will be an exciting opening match. We will see some great moves from both teams. The second match will be high paced and the third will focused mainly on the future development.”

Patrick van Brakel (WiFi & Linux): “We have a lot of work to do.”

Bas Willems (ROS tools & low-level control implementation @Home): “It will be difficult tomorrow. It took a long time today to get the AMIGO to start moving.”

Janno Lunenburg (Team Leader @Home): “The presentation will be nice to watch. The AMIGO must do it completely on his own. He must present himself!”
