Power Supply Throws a Spanner in the Work

1 April 2011

Today AMIGO made his first appearance ever during a tournament. Together with seven other teams he competed in three Challenges. It was a tough day with lots of emotion for the @Home team members. The happiness to see the first meters the AMIGO made on her first tournament day was exchanged by sadness when an important Challenge failed due to power loss. Nevertheless we look back at an exciting day.

The first Challenge went pretty ok. The AMIGO had some problems delivering the registration form, which cost some point. Fortunately our team captain Janno Lunnenburg made up for that during the poster presentation. In the end, the robot left the arena with 510 points in his pocket.

The much anticipated second Challenge resulted in a huge disappointment for the team. Expectations where very high for this Challenge but when the AMIGO lost power because accidentally a switch was turned of, it all fell in pieces. In order to fix this minor problem the covers had to be removed but this took more than the allowed five minutes of set-up time. The judges disqualified AMIGO.

A direct robot versus robot face-off was the setting for the third and last Challenge of the day. Each robot had to navigate through different rooms and while doing so collect different objects. Almost all teams scored zero points during this round. The AMIGO saw what was coming and wisely refused to even enter the door.

Eventually AMIGO scored a total of 510 points and is now ranked seventh out of eight. With 315 point short of a top five ranking the completion is still entirely open. Tomorrow teams can earn up to 3000 points, the video below shows AMIGO preparing for this second roudn of challenges.

Nobody Passes the Goalkeeper

TURTLE nr. 1 made its debute in a game against Carpe Noctem (won 12 against 0). During this first appearance he had to be substituted a couple of times in order to fix some minor issues. A limited view with the omnivision camera was one of the issues that had to be dealt with, Rob van den Berg (hardware) used his powerfile to take care of this in a rigorous way.

Once these teething problems were fixed, the goalkeeper was unstoppable! His presence was a welcome improvement of our defensive capabilities. Stuttgart was definately ready for battle but thanx to some impressive saves by the goalkeeper we won the game ( 2 - 0 ).

Teammembers in deep thought while leading 16 - 0

The third game of the day (against Mostly Harmless) resulted in a huge victory. Through a 16 - 0 score the team was completely wiped of the field. Still our team members were not completely sattisfied (picture above).

RoboQuotes

Hans Beckhoff (via Livestream chat) – ‘With or without power, we still love AMIGO.’

René van de Molengraft - ‘I think we should be able to score twenty goals during a single match.’
