Carpe Noctem Scores Against Tech United

2 April 2011

Tech United vs. RFC Stuttgart (5 - 0) - The previous match against Stuttgart was a perfect example of strong defence. Both teams put their robots incatenaccio modewich longtime prevented them from making a goal. Also yesterday it took quite some time before the TURTLEs started scoring. Same as with humans, catenaccio soccer is dealt with best by creative individual actions. TURTLE 4 felt strong enough to deliver these actions today. After intercepting the ball he started going solo in a way that would impress even the most experienced RoboCup watcher. Unfortunately it will only be our livestream watchers that will ever see this move on video because our Tech United camera team was filming AMIGO's free challenge at the same time.

Tech United vs. Mostly Harmless (27 - 0) - Earlier this week, Mostly Harmless had to cancell two of their matches because their robots were not ready to play. With might and main the team tried to prepare the robots and it was a sign of courage that the team was willing to play against Tech United. This courage was not rewarded though. Just a couple of minutes into play the fieldplayers collapsed and their goalkeeper had to take care of this match alone. By smart positioning it was able to stop the first six shots by our attackers but after also their keeper robot got hit by technical defect the game was over for Mostly Harmless.

Tech United vs. Carpe Noctem (8 - 4) -At the start of this match the goal difference of Tech United was +62, still with zero goals scored by opponents. Slowly there was an unhealthy amount of self esteem building up within the TURTLEs. A fast opening goal by Carpe Noctem forced our robots to change this attitude. Making matters worse, Carpe Noctem was leading three against one at halftime! Faces of our teammembers immedeately turned serious, nobody foresaw this impressive performance of the German team. Our livestream connection was slowly turning redhot because of the sudden increase in viewers, a significant share of them were Carpe Noctem fans. A few minutes into the second half, our robots were able to recover. Same as with the previous match, TURTLE 4 made some impressive goals. It scored three goals in the second half. A huge relieffor, amongst others, team member van den Berg (picture above).

AMIGO moves up in Standings

Our team members competing in the @Home competition again were put to the test yesterday, emotions went up and down within seconds. Beforehand the team decided not to put too much efford in Challenge five, which turned out to be a strong tactical decision because none of the teams was able to obtain a significant amount of points there.

The 'Who is Who Challenge' was only doable by a few of the most experienced teams in the competition. Our robot was able to recognize an object as being human but unfortunately could not take it from there. Tech United was focussing on the Open Challenge, presented by team member Rob Janssen. After a last-minute repair AMIGO was ready only seconds before it had to perform. The audience and judge were pretty impressed by AMIGO trying to open a cabinet while using information from the RoboEarth database. We obtained 600 points in this challenge which resulted in a sixth position in the overall ranking, pretty good for a first participation!
