TURTLEs reach milestone

3 April 2011

The dual against Stuttgart was not relevant for Tech United regarding the standings in the group matches. Tech United fans that did not watch this match on our live stream missed something impressive though! Wouter Aangenent (Strategy specialist) wrote software that will change TURTLE soccer forever. Our team members have been speculating for years what it would look like if our robots could pass the ball on smart occasions during the game. Why not use the topcam to find a team member on the field to passover to? Thus far Tech United did not manage to create a feature like this, but yesterday at 19.40 pm the TURTLEs succeeded in doing a so-called smart passover. RFC Stuttgart had the honor to be the opponent during this game. It seemed as if their robots knew that they were part of a very special match for Tech United, it gave them wings and new found energy. The match ended in a 1 – 1 tie which meant point loss for Tech United, but it is a bitter sweet loss. The team cheered five times during the match, because the Passovers where a treat to the eye to watch. It’s the year 2011, the place is Magdeburg, Tech United Eindhoven plays dynamic soccer!

Tech united vs. carpe Noctem (6 - 1) - Yesterday the third matchup between Carpe Noctem and Tech United was played. Immediately after the kick-off Carpe Noctem scored a goal, and most Tech United team members began sweating. The keeper found the whole thing intimidating during this exciting match of his first tournament and decided to become very nervous. Trying to hide away behind his own goal, he kept bumping the back-end of his goal. Luckily the field players have enough experience to deal with this kind of play. As soon as they saw the keepers problems they turned to some strong robot to robot defense. Scoring was also not a problem, with thanks to a beautiful goal by TURTLE 2. It was a exciting game that stayed at an equal score until late in the second half, where the TURTLEs took control of the game and made sure the victory was for Tech United.

Tech Untited vs. Mosly Harmless (22 - 1) - Just minutes before the game between Tech United and Mostly Harmless should start, our EtherCAT and USB expert Gerard Harkema found the problem that was haunting TURTLE 5. Normally #5 loves to attack on the flanks but seemed to forget how to do this during this tournament. The problem was the camera of the TURTLE, which was accidentally mounted backwards. Solving this problem gave #5 an opportunity to take part in the target shooting exercise that we now call Tech United vs. Mostly Harmless. A special moment in the game was the goal that Mostly Harmless scored, although they where only playing with a non-functioning keeper, and no field players. Scoring a goal was possible thanks to our #2, which is playing a fantastic tournament thus far. Shooting at the goal he hit the keeper so hard that the ball rebounded 20 meters across the field into our own goal. Another thing that we never saw before during a RoboCup MSL soccer match. Our keeper was at this point still trying to overcome his problems and was unable to stop this ball. The game resulted in 22 -1, our congratulations go out to Jan van de Molengraft who exactly predicted this score in our TOTO.

Today finals are played in the Robocup German Open 2011

The German Open 2011 is nearing its conclusion. Today the last matches of the Mid-Size League will be played. After the developments the team made yesterday, they decided that today will be everything or nothing. Playing with some new features they will either show a fantastic match never seen before or play a very difficult game that will be lost very easy. The new keeper has had some aggressiveness training and also is more capable in finding his location on the soccer field now. Keep an eye on him during the next math. The schedule for today is as follows:

At half past 11 the second semi final will be played between 1. RFC Stuttgart and Carpe Noctem.

At 1 o’ clock a demonstration match will be played between Tech United Eindhoven and the loser of the second semi final.

3:00 hours is the time we are all looking forward to. It will be the final game of the tournament. The United is already in it, because Mostly Harmless has forfeited the first semi final.

A short preview of the day provided by our Team Leader Roel Merry: “I don’t know who will win the semi final between RFC and Carpe Noctem. My guess is RFC, because they are very strong. I think it will be a difficult game, knowing that RFC is very fast and has strong defense. Their keeper is also very good. Against RFC we will not be able to use our new Passover-software as good as we want. We will need to rely on our dribble. Should we play agains Carpe Noctem then our Passover-software will be of more use. I predict a final Tech United versus 1. RFC Stuttgart which will end in a 4-1 victory for Tech United.”

AMIGO enjoying a well deserved rest

The guys from the @Home team are still doing research and development, but the AMIGO itself has a day off. After his “Advanced Who is Who” challenge yesterday, where he scored 375 points, the curtain fell. The team performed very well and they must now prepare for the next tournament in July.

All teams had problems, which is no surprise. Team captain Janno Lunenburg spoke: “You can always expect problems. We learned a lot here in Magdeburg and made some good progress. We are very happy with this first participation in the @Home League. ”

Tomorrow will be the final day for RoboCup@Home where the final challenge will be played by the top 5 teams of the tournament. During this final, the teams must show all they have got. The room for errors is gone and the judges will be stricter then before.
